MODERN surfboards GSI

Hi pips,

I am a new member here, and I've been looking on to buy a new board.
Just started a year ago and using a bic 7'9 which is a bit low on volume for me. I'm having difficulties catching green waves (doing OK with white waves). I guess I need something longer for more paddling speed and more volume for buoyancy (I'm in my early 40s and 78kg)

I looking for some 8'6 board as longer one (>9ft) will be a bit of a step up for me.
At the moment I looking at the Boss (MODERN surfboards GSI) but trying to support the local shapers (Sydney). Secondhand 8'6 ones are very rare or expensive.
Can anyone recommend a board that size or have other suggestions?

Welcome and whereabouts in Sydney? Might know where you can go for boards!
The Modernnboards or Walden out of the GSI ranges around 8’ 6” are good options.
Torq boards are another option, quite a few people on the forum like them.
At this stage in your evolution, buying a new board like those above is a viable option, especially if secondhand boards are rare and pricey.
Get your surfing going and then go supporting a local,shaper by developing a relationship when you understand your surfing an fully know what you want in a board.
This is like your discovery that the BIC just didn’t do it!
The length 8’6” won’t be a step,up but a step,forward!

for the cost of a new 'boss modern' you can certainly find a local shaper who will make a board that suits.

Modern boards are fine; although why not a modern double wide at 8'4 rather than a 'boss'? Quite a bit cheaper

Do think a 9'1 will be too long for my progress? They are way more easy to find (compare to 8'6).

9’1” is a great learning length, learn the glide and the ride , will paddle well and serve you well

9'1 will be just fine. You will be able to learn your basics of catching green waves, trimming and starting to turn the board. It will be easier to do this on a 9'1 than on an 8'6 as it's more stable, easier to catch waves with on average and easier to maintain and gain speed on through trimming.

At the stage that you are starting to get a feel for powerful turns (most likely 1 or more years' time) you can consider stepping down in length if you want. It is by no means a necessity to go for shorter boards though, even if you become an advanced surfer.
