Tail repair and pigment

Hi all,

First post on the forum and in need of some repair advice.

I have repaired boards before using either the premix tube stuff that cures in the sun, or for big dings resin, qcell, fibreglass type kit.

However, I have just dinged the tail on my longboard, probably from the leash looking at it.

So I have two questions here. The first is would you just use some of the premade solareze stuff and go over the compression ding without cutting the ding out? I am just loathed to cut up the tail on my pretty new board!

Secondly, I think you can mix pigment with this stuff but any idea where to get it from in the UK in small amounts? I am also slightly regretting the tint choice;)

I think solarez would be ok but make sure you use the right variety ie Epoxy or not epoxy. then getting orange tint might be a hassle. You might try a surf shop. The only size I have bought or seen for sale is 2 ounces, way more than the drop or two you need. For best results have an experienced ding repair pro do it. What you do probably won't be as pretty or as strong as what they do. If you do solarez repair then that area will be weaker than before. Some repair guys do multiple layers of glass and make it stronger than it was before. One other idea and I don't know if this will work but crafters often work with resin and you might find small amounts of tint in a craft store (make sure it is compatible with the type of resin you use)

It looks like it has a dent in the tail, not just that 'cut' at the base - do you have a photo from above? You can solarez fairly big dents but if can peel away over time; if its impacting on the foam (depressing the foam) you might want to dig it out, fill with resin / q-cell and cover with glass.

guess it depends on whether you want a quick fix that may or may not last; or a permanent fix

Using Pigment will make the repair stand out more, especially since it's a tinted board. But if you have to, you can you model car/airplane paint like Tamiya we have in Japan or Testors in the U.S. ( not sure on EPS ). Really I would just do the repair in clear, no tint or pigment.
Seems there's some burns and sand through. I would cap the whole tail edge with more layers of fiberglass cloth. It's bound to happen on the other edge.

Hi all thanks for the replies.

I have been debating this and have chickened out on this repair to a local pro repairer. If it wasn't the tail I probably would do it. But as the guy will do a better lasting job it is the right choice
