Can you nose ride a single fin foam board?

Postby kookiemonster » Tue May 28, 2024 10:57 pm

I'm wondering if the single fin foamies / those with a large centre fin allow you to nose ride?

I often ride an 8ft foamie with a thruster set up which is fun but when I stretch 5 on steeper waves the tail/ fins lift out of the water and I slide down the wave and fall off. I am wondering if a large centre fin would let me stay on the wave and even get 10 toes to the front?

I'm looking at this board which advertises itself as a nose rider. But also wondering if I want to nose ride I would still need to get a longboard length board? I would ideally love an 8ft board as it is the longest board that fits in the car.

I do actually own a 10ft long board but find it stressful to control when the beach is busy so I prefer the foamie because it feels safer.
I am 83kg (183lbs) 6'1. would consider myself an intermediate surfer. I can cross step forwards and hang 5 on the 10ft (stretch 5 on the foamie) but have never hung 10 on either

Short answer: In comparison to a Thruster set up, I would say a single fin is easier to noseride.
Long answer: It's not the fin that allows you to noseride. Just as it's not the "Arrow" but the "Indian".

You answered your own question. If you've never got a "Hang-10" before on previous boards, then a 8 foot soft top with a single fin will not make any difference.

My friend has the 8'6" version of the O&E. I didn't like how bladey the rails were. Very thin.

Thanks for the reply. I might just try switch back to the 10ft for a while and see how I go!

Switching back to your 10 footer, that you couldn't Hang-10 on before, will not matter. Buying a full on "Noserider" , with a big ole fin, will not matter. It won't matter unless you know the basics of how to noseride. ( please forgive me if you already do )

You need to learn the "Lock". Then you can noseride virtually any longboard. ( and even a 8 footer )
