Single Fin Comparisons Help

Postby TeeBee89 » Thu Feb 29, 2024 12:34 pm

Have been looking at fins for a mid-length (7'6ish). While I'll definitely get a 4A, I was wondering are there any (if at all?) substantive differences between a Christenson Volan PG and a Channel Islands Spicy Single Fin? By that I mean, are they both fairly similar to a wide base flex like the 4A, or narrower base like a 4C? The PG sort of looks like a 4C and the CI Spicy write ups make comparisons to Liddle L-Flex and Yater Classic, but I'm wary of corp-o promos. Was just looking for some variety, otherwise I might just opt for different sized 4As. Thanks!

I like 4a’s. Have them in every size from 7” to 9.75”. Have a bucket of other ones too but 4a’s are definitely a favorite. I stuck with true ames and appreciate the consistency from fin to fin size. Removes a variable from board to board.

Thanks Geezer! I like em a lot too and leaning toward going with 7" and 8" sized ones after all for the 7'6. Maybe splurge on a volan. As you say, I need to get used to the board and the 4a would help with that, before I even think of moving it around the fin box. If I'm remembering this correctly from a previous thread, you advised the 7" for waist high under and 8" for waist and bigger?

Depends on what for. I use cut-away fins for sharper turning, but switch to a longer raking fin when I want to try to noserise and such.

Thanks IB! That wasn't something I'd considered.
