A backup shortboard on days you cannot longboard

Postby noformalites » Tue Nov 24, 2020 5:47 pm

Hi guys!
Would it be a terrible idea to invest in a shortboard for the days that I cannot easily transport my longboard?
I commute 2 hours to work in Santa Cruz and would really love to catch some morning sesh's prior to work. However, it is not possible to bring my longboard. Is it worthwhile idea to get a shortboard so that I may leave it in my car?

Would really appreciate input. Thanks!

What’s the biggest board you can fit in your car?

A few people by foam boards as their ‘keep in the car’ boards - no issue with heat damage etc

That is reassuring to hear! A 6'1 board is the max the "keep in car" board. Do you have any suggestions? I love that term hahah!

Yes, terrible idea if you can't make it out to the break and catch waves. Paddling will be much harder and your timing / reaction times for popping up/taking off has to be more spot on than on a long board.

But "a" board is better than "no" board. I am in the same boat here in Japan. The maximum length allowed in the trains is 2 meters / 6'5".
The car we have access to can only hold up to a 7'10".

I recently got the Softech 6'6" Sally model for my wife ( who is also a longboarder ). It has some fat thick rails and floats really good. And a good thing is you can install/take off FCS twin tab fins.

This one is their squash tail which I think would be good for your needs.

Thanks Wakikikichan! That was exactly what I needed to hear. At what point and stage was your wifes surfing experience at the time choosing to go with the Softech 6'6" Sally model?
fleshin'! I don't even care if its designed for women, but it comes in all pink. It's cool how it resembles the fish.

She's a surfer. Although she has won amateur surfing contest, that doesn't mean anything as she'd rather free surf. She didn't choose the Sally Softech, I found it on Craigslist. It had only been used a few times. I got it for her birthday present. We need something that would take the bumps and bruises riding to the beach on a side rack ( and also deal with the summer crowds )

Softech also has a Bomber that checks in at 5'10" that almost looks the same except with a Round tail. Or 6'4" if you dont roll the windows all the way up  I've been thinking about getting the same as a summer slop smasher :mexwave:

That's awesome man. Do you have a backup mini log, or shorter board?

I'm debating a few Softechs.. 5'8" Kyus King Fish & 5'10" Mason Twin for performance shortboards or a 6'4" Bomber for a Mini Mal / beater board

Do your back seats fold down? If so, go to as shop and ask them to let you try how it fits into the car.

With seats down and the front seat reclined you can fit a lot of board in there. If you are used to a longboard try a funboard, say 7'2 or so.
