Firewire Submoon Review

Postby Z mann R2 » Tue Aug 25, 2015 2:32 am

I posted this in a youtube video review of this board and just figured I'd share:

youtube vid review here:

Okay so I ride both long boards and short boards. Being in South Texas, long boards are used a little bit more frequently. I wanted something a little more fun to ride than the typical long board on those small days. So I chose this board in an 8'2" length. Now I weigh 165 pounds and I am 6 feet tall. My other longboard is a 9 foot Stewart Redline poly-PU. This board blows the Stewart out of the water. It can turn, it can cruise, it can nose ride (for a short time, lol) and it is so stable while offering all those things. It is honestly the best thing I have ever surfed. Now on big days I still bring out my short board (6'0 SuperBrand Vapors) but on every other day pretty much waste-chest high or lower, this thing just works amazing. The wave can start fizzling out and you can just cheat up a little bit, put just one foot up on that wide duck nose and she starts to build that speed up again. It's magical. All while having near short board turning abilities when you sit back on that razor thin tail with that tail rocker that lifts her front outta the water and with a quad fin set up and that moon tail, she just CUTS so well!

Also, the Timbertek construction is amazing. Not only is it gorgeous but it is really tough, I bang it up against the truck and not a single thing ever gets damaged. I just really think this is an underrated type of board construction

I do however need to get some smaller (and better color) quad fins for her I think......but man the bamboo Futures are so dang expensive!

Great review, thanks!

So the 802 is the perfect size for u? I'm still bit in doubt between 802 and 807.. I'm about same in lenght and hight, I'm not sure about age I'm 52yo and start feeling it :?

I'll try get one with FCS boxes so I can use the fins I already own. I've got PC7 thruster and for quads I can combine the PC7 with my G-XQ. U think that will work?

It fleshin' slays!!! Ive been riding mine in some big waves and I was able to get completely barreled on it 3 days ago. Once the swell backed off I was able to use the quad-fin set up and the sub moon tail to just crank cut backs and little snaps. but put it in some juicy waves and you will see what it can really do. It is so fast and just very playful. Absolutly love it. Not to mention Ive gotten a couple cross steps on it as well. Its hard to cross step on, Super hard. but it can be done. the snub nose makes cheating 5 a possibility. I love it!

Another year of more experience on this board and I'm still loving it. Nose riding is a no go however. It can however be cheated up a little to maintain speed.

My questions are, have any of y'all used any different fin set ups? Mines till has the large quads. I'm considering going with smaller and possible looser fins. I'm not liking how on some turns, the rails get buried and I lose speed.

I've had my Submoon for the last week and I love it! I usually ride a 9'0" log and haven't had much experience putting weight on the tail to make turns. Wow, does this thing make turning fun! The super foiled out tail is scary thin, (It does actually scare me when I wipeout). The cool thing about this board is that all the foam is in the middle. So all it takes is a very slight shift in your center of gravity to get the board to respond. When catching waves, wiggle up to get down the wave face; when trimming, shift forward to gain speed... etc. I'm still more of a beginner than intermediate, so I've still yet to unlock the potential of this board. I can't wait to start making turns that get me vertical and aiming for the lip! I would love to hear from anyone else who's ridden this board and what they think. I typically ride my Submoon in 2-3 ft. beach break here in LA.

I'm always happy to talk about my Submoon :D
I've got the 8'2 and ride it with a medium thruster setup, I've tried quads but didn't like it so much. I'm 6', 163lbs, 55yo, I surf in Bali. I also surf shorter boards, been out on my Addvance 6'6 a lot lately.
The beauty of the Submoon is that it works in all conditions I surf, small(knee high) to big(1.5oh), hollow-fat. You surf it different according conditions, but the board simply always delivers.
And it is great in crowds. You can sit inside of the longboards for late takeoffs, and still have enough paddle speed to get outside for the cleanup sets, or outside of the shortboards to get in earlier.
On weaker waves/sections you step forward about 2/3th, and when the wave steepens you step back and can handle real steep parts.
With it's 60L it's my easiest paddler, but it's glide doesn't compare to the flatter longboards. And compared to the 6'6 it has a lot more swing weight up front. But for me when I go to crowded spots or when I'm not feeling very fit, it's my go to board.
Also I like using it to explore new spots, so I still get a good wave count and some long rides. When I know the wave better I bring in the 6'6 to do some harder turns. But also the SM 8'2 has a great roundhouse cutback when you've got the back foot over the fins.
And the board looks great!
