2013 / 2014 record bad stretch for Atlantic surf. Reasons?

I would love to hear anyone's feedback on this.

I've been surfing for a long time and can't help but notice the reduced swell in recent years. This has been a record stretch for the most calm period in the Atlantic. Nearly every storm has been losing energy and turning away from the coast. It appears the storm machine is just broken. There's been some strange environmental factors going on. Apparently there's been a shearing wind of dry air coming off the Sahara, instead of warm moist are need for activitiy, but also even worst, an unexpected weakening of the thermohalin Circulation, basically a current convayor belt. Not good.

The question is, are these xxxxx waves here to stay or will things return to normal?

This is an element of Climate Change. No matter how you think climate change has come about.
As the equatorial areas of the earth get hotter they drive the temperate zones further towards the poles.
As far as I understand it and my model is Pacific based there is also a shift in currents and then frequency of interchangeable systems El Nino / La Nina.

From beach side observation the summer storm systems of Australia that used to pass about the level of the NSW Victoria border now pass below Tasmania so our local wave machine is somewhat broken too.

Who knows?

Will we look back and think that 2014 was just a bit of a sub-standard year, or will we be thinking "oh, yes, that was when it all began"? Or will we be thinking, "oh, do you remember 2014, the calm before the storm"?

We're only going to know in hindsight, unfortunately.

Year after year it had always been the same way. Summer's flat ( Mid June, July, and most of August). The end of August it would always kick in like clockwork. The ocean would stay generally active through Sept, Oct, Nov, and decrease slightly from December through February, although still receiving some storms and Noreasters. Spring would pick up again March, April, May, and the start to go flat again in June. Of course it's not an exact science but that was the general activity pattern. Now it's just all f'd up.

According to magicseaweed there is a proper storm brewing in the North Atlantic so the surf should be picking up for the next couple of days!
