This spot is also known as Beiti. It is the closest spot to Taipei. You can get there within 30 minutes if there are no traffic. It is also the busiest beach between July to September.
The surf season is all year around but it is most consistent between September and May. Winter season it will be around waist height to overhead. However there rips are quite strong during the winter season and you will find the more experienced locals will flock to the different spots depending on the wind and direction of the swell.
In the summer, the typhoon brings amazing swell to the East Coast of Taiwan. It starts from overhead to double and even triple overhead waves. On average you get between 1-2 typhoon swells per month during the summer season. If you're looking for barrels then you will not want to miss the typhoon swells.
When the water gets really warm, you will see a lot of jellyfish. They aren't deadly but they are painful. Most surfers will wear a shirt or rashguard to prevent getting stung from it.
There are coaches and train from Taipei that will take you to Wushi harbour or Waio train station. Which is around 15 minutes walk by foot. However I would recommend to drive as there are so many spots within 5 mins of each other.
Wushi is situated in Yilan County. It is also known as the Taipei's back garden. Since the 12km tunnel was built in 2006 between Taipei and Yilan. The tourism industry boom and you will see people from Taipei flock to Yilan over the weekend for food, entertainment and sightseeing. The traffic is horrendous especially during public holiday. A 30 minutes drives turns into an 8 hours car park on the highway.
There are a dozen of surfer accommodation at Beiti which usually cost $16 per night for a bunk bed.
Parking is completely free at Wushi. There's plenty of parking available for everyone. However do watch out for the thieves and do not leave any valuable in your car.
All the shops here rent out board at a flat fee of $16 per day. However it seems like some are trying to increase the price. I would suggest to rent from Surf Nation. The owner looks after the board and make sure they are properly waxed and the leash are in a better condition.
All of the surf shops here provides surf lessons but I wouldn't recommend them. Sometimes the coaches themselves are too busy so they let other less experienced surfers to give out the lessons.
Near Wushi, you can either take a boat to Turtle island. Watch the dolphins and whales. Or you can go up the mountain and enjoy the view at Mr Brown's coffee castle. You have good and cheap seafood all year round. You can buy your food from the fishing boat and then ask them to cook it in the restaurant.
One of the biggest nightmarket Luodong in Taiwan is around 30 mins away. Here you will find hundreds and hundreds of weird and wonderful food of Taiwan. You also have the hotspring in Jiaoxi where a lot of surfers would go for a dip in the winter season. Jiaoxi is also famous for it's red light district but do take care as it isn't legal in Taiwan.
There's also the Langyang Museum which will give you the history of Yilan and how it came about. It is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.
