A Surf Contest On A Deserted Island In The Maldives!

Description

For over a decade now, the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy has offered up some of the dreamiest contest surf anyone sees all year. Sultans is an everyperson's dream wave, a perfectly tapered, aquamarine blue right reef that bends around a remote atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It's also the fanciest surf contest of the year, where competitors and their families enjoy the Four Seasons' amenities in between heats.
And for surf fans, it also offers a chance to watch some of their favorite surfers who are no longer front-and-center and on CT webcasts. Case in point: this year saw Michel Bourez, Owen Wright, Jesse Mendes, Craig Anderson and local ripper Ismail “Smiley” Rasheed go head to head in single-fin, twin-fin and thruster divisions over the course of the week.
While Wright dominated the single-fin and twin-fin divisions, Bourez -- while nursing a pulled hamstring, no less -- pulled out a perfect ten on the last and best wave of the contest.
“I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to surf today,” smiled Bourez, “but I was always going to try. Before the first heat I figured out if I put all my weight on the back foot I could still surf, and I felt like I was in the zone after that. I felt the mana, as we say in Tahiti, I felt in tune with the energy of the ocean. I’m so happy we had such perfect conditions, and to do this with my family here. It’s very special, a week we will always remember.”
