Surf in New-Caledonia
New-Caledonia is one of the best surfing destinations in the South Pacific thanks to swell consistency. All lows between Tasmania, Sydney and New Zealand send ground swells North and hit the Caledonian reef. Unfortunately the breaks are only accessible by boat, as the swell breaks on the barrier reef, a few kilometres out to sea, where passes, false passes and bends in the reef produce some quality waves. The best surfing season is from March to October, when swells are consistent and can go up to 5 meters a few times, and wind conditions are optimal. The water temperature in winter is 22 degrees, and although one can surf year round in a rash vest, a spring suit comes in handy, especially in the mornings.
