Oceanside, California—Ice-Nine Foam Works is committed to preserving the most ancient aspect of surf culture and history—the custom board. By sponsoring the 3rd annual Anything But Three Fish Fry this Sunday in Oceanside, the innovative foam company continues to show support of American board builders in celebration of the sacred craft.
“Leave your banners and sales reps at home because that’s not what this event is about,” says Shawn Ambrose of Real Surfboards. Oceanside’s Anything But Three Fish Fry is anything but a trade show. And although you might not find Reef Girls and free energy drinks on the beach this Sunday, what you will find is a behind-the-scene look at the creation of a surfboard, a loud dose of originality and a good time testing out the sticks. Think of it as a hot rod show, except you get to test-ride the cars on the lot instead of just drooling over them,” Ambrose adds. He anticipates at least 500 surfers will show up at this year’s event to check out “some really creative stuff.”
“We’re honored to be a part of AB3 again this year because it allows the public to get to know the men behind the craft,” says Ice-Nine’s founder Jon Stillman. “It’s important that anyone in the market for a new board understands why it’s necessary to keep the tradition of the custom surfboards alive.”
AB3 attendees will not only have a the opportunity to meet the legendary craftsmen behind the shapes such as Greg Griffin, Jeff Clark and DJ Kane, but they’ll also get to test any of the boards, speak one-on-one with their favorite shapers, sanders and team riders and place custom orders. But that’s not all the action happening on the beach. A panel of judges will be cruising the beach looking for the boards that stand out in the categories such as “Best Home-built Board” and “Most Original.”
The winners of each category will be awarded blanks from Ice-Nine Foam Works, and the “Best in Show” champion will automatically be birthed into the Sacred Craft Tribute to the Masters Shape-off. Winners will be announced at the after-party at the Fish Joint in Oceanside, amidst the live music of Joe Wood.
And just in case you’re in the market for some new blanks, the festive Ice-Nine truck will also be on-site, dishing out quality blanks to lucky AB3 attendees.
