Roxy Pro ON in Solid Surf at Sunset Beach

SUNSET BEACH, Hawaii (Friday, November 28, 2008) – The Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, stop No. 7 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, is set to commence this morning in solid eight-to-ten foot (3 metre) surf on offer at Sunset Beach.

The second stop on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (an ASP Specialty Series), the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach opened up with the six-woman surf off this morning, with Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 17, Coco Ho (HAW), 17, and Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 19, taking the highly-coveted spots into the main event.

“The swell has come up and we have beautiful waves coming through at Sunset today,” Randy Rarick, Vans Triple Crown Event Director, said. “We’re running the women this morning but will keep a careful eye on the conditions as it is projected to jump. If it spikes to a level that is too big, we’ll call girls competition off and start with the men in the O’Neill World Cup”

Today’s Roxy Pro action may prove paramount to the race for the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 1 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, will look to capitalize on her current lead and will face Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, Rosanne Hodge, 21, and Ho in Round 1.

Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, defending Roxy Pro Champion and current No. 2 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, will hope to overtake Gilmore as she faces Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 22, Karina Petroni (USA), 20, and Fitzgibbons in Round 1.

Round 1 of the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach will commence at 8:30am this morning.
