Virginia Beach, Va.-- The Wahine Surf Club is set to host the inaugural “Surf For The Cure” charity surfing contest to raise both breast cancer awareness and funds for the Tidewater Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The event will take place at First Street Jetty at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 7 a.m. until 5p.m.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which hits close to home for the Wahine Surf Club, a local 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the stewardship of an active lifestyle for women through watersports. Like any other group of people, breast cancer, as well as cancer in many other forms, has affect so many of our club member's lives. From those battling their individual diagnoses to those coping with loved ones battling the disease, breast cancer awareness is one of the driving forces of the club. Having experience the healing power of the sport of surfing through local charity events like Wave Warriors, Surfer's Healing and Life Rolls On; we wanted to extend a special experience to those affected by breast cancer in our community with an array of surfing clinics and activities on the beach on Oct. 11, the same day Susan G. Komen Tidewater hosts it's “Race For The Cure” on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Additionally, a Surf For The Cure's surfing contest and standup paddleboarding race aim to raise money for Susan G. Komen Tidewater through entry fees, as well as raffle prize items provided by event sponsors.
A true highlight of the event is the presence of the Sentara Mobile Digital Mammography Unit, which will be stationed at the event to provide free breast cancer screenings for pre-registered event attendees.
The Wahine Surf Club, a 501(c)3 organization, is an open, positive online community designed to expose the thrilling and fulfilling world of waterman sports and lifestyle to women of all ages. Though the word “wahine” in Hawaiian roughly translates to “woman,” we welcome men to join and share their perspectives to enhance our inclusive community.
