S.O.S Save our spot: Casa de Porros, Tarifa

www.saveourspot.org logo

Casa de Porros, known worldwide for windsurfing and kitesurfing for its windy conditions recently suffered big changes that may have resulted, if things do not change, in the end of one of the best spots in Europe.

September 14, local police, under the commandment of the Municipality of Tarifa was empty spot Casa de Porros, known as "the Prairie" in order to build a parking lot. Earth moving equipment had been mobilized to flatten the area and surrounded by a mound of earth. As you can see on the image of Google Earth, this place is located far from the sea in summer and would cover only 10% of actual needs.

This means that whoever is lucky enough to catch a spot (ie, one in ten) must first climb the mound of 1.5 m, carrying his equipment, then go to the front 400m Levante (east wind gusting up to 60 knots) to reach the beach. This course is reserved only don `lucky, others will be forced to park along the dangerous national situation much worse. He who knows this road knows that accidents are inevitable. All this is supposedly under the pretext of protecting nature as the city of Tarifa has in the past 30 years, showed no interest in this place, just appreciated by sportsmen and nature-friendly.

Windsurfing and respect for nature are certainly not incompatible. Whoever runs the rating may be aware that many hotels and apartments were built too close to the beaches, and other projects are allowed as the construction of a resort in surfers paradise, El Palmar. How to explain that such projects are accepted and on the other hand we do a spot close to protect nature? Clearly it is essential to protect nature but it can be done while accepting the presence of man. We do not want hotels and apartments, we just want access to the beach meets the needs of skateboarders. After 30 years of using this meadow, the place has not changed, which proves that nature does not suffer.

The town of Tarifa, who has lived 80 years through tourism generated by the practice of windsurfing and kite turns more and more of this tourism and makes decisions without taking into account the needs of these athletes. Strangely, windsurfing and kite have no weight in Tarifa, although 80% of the city lives on that tourism.
