Lay Day Called at Relentless Boardmasters

Moody shot of Fistral Beach

NEWQUAY - England (Friday, August 6, 2010) - Event officials at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Relentless Boardmasters called a lay day due to small inconsistent conditions on offer at the main site of Fistral beach this morning. Waves in the 1-2ft (0.5m) range greeted organisers and surfers forcing a halt to the 120,000$US ASP 5-Star Men's Star Series sanctioned even

Surfers competing in the Relentless Boardmasters are out to claim valuable One World Ratings points in their bid to secure a spot on the ASP Dream Tour 2011. European competitors have the added challenge of building on their European Men's Series ratings at the Relentless Boardmasters which is stop nº 4 of 12 and will eventually crown this year's European Men's Champion.

After accessing conditions from early this morning contest director Dave Reed decided along with ASP Europe regional head judge Iain Buchanan that the waves on offer were not ideal to continue with round three of competition and with an improvement in swell predicted for over the weekend that for the benefit of the surfers a lay day was called.

Dave Reed explains the reasoning behind today's decision.

"If we had to push the surfers out there we could but it would not be very good for them to be out there right now when the conditions are going to improve over the weekend. We are coming into the conclusion of the event now," continued Reed. "So the schedule planned at this stage would be to run most of the surfing off when the swell is at its peak which is over Saturday and finish off over Sunday with semis and the final where the weather improves and the surf will get a lot cleaner as well when the wind drops off so today is a lay day for the contest with a new swell arriving tomorrow with better surf and weather conditions so it should be an exciting weekend"

The Relentless Boardmasters is part of a massive week long festival of surf, skate, bmx and music at Newquay with thousands of visitors flocking to Newquay to enjoy the sights and sounds on offer as the Relentless Boardmasters 2010 draws closer to crowning this year's champion over the weekend.

First call tomorrow will be at 10:00 am (local time) for a possible 10:30 kick off. When competition resumes up first will be fellow Australians Leigh McMahon and Russell Molony up against Billy Stairmand (NZL) in heat nº3 of Round three.
