Tomcat360's Shaping Project?

Postby Driftingalong » Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:33 pm

How's the board coming along?

You are shaping your own board right? Is it done; did I miss it?

I tried searching for the old thread were you said you were going to shape one, but I couldn't find it.

Hell no its not a blank leaning against the wall! :D

I was busy last night, so I couldn't make the post, but last night I glassed the bottom, and got some pics!

It looks great (IMO) , did a swirl with blue base, green, yellow, and accent white and black.

My pics are on the other computer, I'll try to get them up when I get home.

Now I just need to cut along the tape, grind and fill my mess up spots, glass the top, grind and fill, hot coat (with poly), sand, fins, and gloss coat!

Weehoo

Here we are, I've got some pictures somewhere before I re shaped the rails, don't know where they are though.

2# EPS blank with RR epoxy lam
PVC stringer
6'8"x20.5x 2 5/8"

the pictures make it look huge, just because of the perspective, I suppose

measuring out all the resin

colors down (green yellow white black)

filling with base color

again

no squeegeing action shots, didnt have enough pairs of clean hands to work the camera

all wetted, pulled, and wrapped !
Image

the board is not as giant as it looks, just perspective

Thanks for all the compliments on the board (and thanks for the confidence booster Libby)

We're not that far off in age, so you shouldn't feel too pervy. :D

Thanks for all the replies.

Unfortnately, I can't work on it this week, because the guy's shop that I'm using is on a surf trip all week (lucky him) so I won't have any updates for a while.

Looking Good

Postby fng » Thu Oct 12, 2006 8:24 pm

Looking good tommy - would like to see it up close.
Just finished a whirlwind set of trips and taking a breather before heading to Buxton to get some last of the season kite time up here in the next couple of weeks before heading south.

Want to help me finish setting up the shop so you can have more regular access to a place where you can work on boards?
Got to move the skate ramps out this Sunday to an undisclosed indoor location downtown.
If your in, I'm pretty sure you'll have access to ride.

Otherwise, I'm still making trips down to both VA Beach and OBX on the weekends.
Got a spare board if that one is not ready.

Don't know if we can figure out how to drag you with us on the next trip to NZ so you can meet Libby - might have to settle for unrequited love.
Let me know about Sunday.
Post somewhere if you can't find the new number.

Good to hear from you Brian.

Sounds like you've been having plenty of fun with all your trips.

I'd love to help you set up, but I've got a place to work on my boards. Still would like to give you a hand, I think I'm gonna be needing some help on a new project coming up. Although this weekend is out for setting up the shop, I'm actually going on one of my few surf trips down to VaB. Leaving Saturday , coming back Sunday.

Sounds like you're ramps got a sweet new home.

I can't find your number, could you post it? If you don't want any of these crazy British guys calling you ( :P ), you can email it to me or PM it to me.

my email is tomcat360@gmail.com

Well, here's an update. A crappy one....

Anyways, we had to grind to cut the lap, which went alright, but then we came to find that the pigmented blue resin had run underneath the tape, so we've been scraping and scraping.....

So we had that figured out, and my friend was working on his board in the shaping room, and they noticed a whole bunch of lumps on the bottom(his is all white). This sent off panic in my head. So I am looking at his, and instantly think, it was either something we did wrong that night, or mine's fleshin' up too.

So I take mine in the shaping room, turn the top lights off, and sure enough....I've got bubbles on the bottom....

We have no idea why, how, what these bubbles are. Hopefully they are solid, if they are they will be covered in the hot coat. If they are not, then I've got strength issues, and if I don't fix them then I will have to grind and patch them, which is gonna make the flow of the resin swirl look like crap.

So not what ya'll wanna hear....but whatever, I just gotta keep pluggin along. Time for lots of reading on swaylocks, and lots of calls to my suppliers.

Someone suggested that the deck wasn't sealed completely, and where there was a gap, the resin soaked into it more, and created a bubble. Sounds plausable, but we really sealed them. Double sealed mine, rather carefully too. Seems that it would be a rather common problem if that was the case. I just hope they are solid and I can keep going on with what I'm doing.....

Pray for me.....
