boardshorts?

Postby jplee3 » Tue Jan 25, 2005 11:08 pm

hey all, this is a pretty silly question but i was wondering what you guys wear when surfing warmer waters.

i picked up a rashguard not long ago after going without one (it HURT!). but as far as shorts go, what do you all recommend? board shorts without the gusset are a little too free for me. has anybody tried swimming jammers? and even wearing boardshorts over jammers?

just wondering...

I typically wear a Speedo with board shorts over top of that.

I used to do that but it now seems like a waste, just wear the speedo if your gunna do that, or just wear the boardshorts without one. Their made the way they are so they don't fill up with sand and rub around, and are super comfortable. Just try it. Jammers look funny, but probally not as funny as a speedo. Try whatever.

The idea of boardshorts being long is so that you don't chafe your legs when straddleing the board whilst sitting. I find that if I haven't worn shorts for a while e.g. the start of the summer the shorts chafe me instead of the board. Apparently this soreness is from the hairs on your lower thigh getting pulled by friction. Boardies also offer a bit more sun protection as you don't want to put too much sun block (if any) on your legs as it will make you slip.

Another problem is that you are all loose inside them so you can chafe your sack. That's why I wear nut-hugging swimming shorts the ones with a net inside under my shorts, it also helps make the boardshorts a tighter snugger fit.

I'd defintiley recommend wearing something under them otherwise you'll just have to break through the pain barrier and let your body gradually adapt to the chafing. And I've never had any problem with sand getting in the shorts (with net).

Just wear speedo's.
Don't come anywhere even remotely near me in them however...

Seriously now, just buy good quality boardies. There is nothing else really available. try rubbing vasline on the areas that chafe or whatever. you'll come right after a couple of sessions.

Why do you say that? Just curious.

I swam competitively for 15 years. Always wore one. No biggie. Now, some fat guy with a hairy back, laying on the beach in one...that's different.

It's different if it's for competitive swimming (althought they still make me cringe) but for lads to wear them of their own free will....

When I lived in austraulia, that was the thing to wear, they were a popular as normal swim suits. Then you go look at europe and their doing the same thing.

I wear speedos (but not to the beach) because I swim competitivley, I got districts this weekend....

Same thing as wearing them by themselves, that's just being too embarrassed to show 'em!

I totally agree with u irish girl, thats pretty disgusting to see a guy wearing speedos (nut huggers). Just wear some boxers underneath ur boardshorts, its plenty comfortable and u dont feel like a fag. Please dont come to texas if you're going to be wearing speedos.
thanks haha

You wear a rash vest & board shorts over your wetsuit?

Why? That's just excess bulk

the word poser springs to mind!! Sorry but like c'mon....

I find if if you really want to wear your rashguard you can wear it underneath your wetsuit, and that keeps you even warmer because it makes the layer of warm water next to your skin slightly thicker and more insluated and whatnot... Boardshorts over a wetsuit I don't think are excessive, otherwise I can never figure out what to do with my wax. I sometimes stick it in the leg, but then my leg gets cold. I duno.

Why do need your wax when you're out in the water? I've never had to apply more wax mid-wave. :D

in the winter for warmth yeah but in the sumer? bearing in mind i was warm wearing ONLY boardies and a rash vest. i just had to laugh.
