9ft boards - wave size

Postby greypump » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:20 pm

Was wondering if you have a 9ft board is there a wave size that starts to get very tircky for these boards to work well on? I know longboards are supposed to be better for smaller waves but for a 9 footer are we talking about it becoming inneffective on anything over 6ft or so? Or does it really just depend on the surfer?

Depends on the surfer, wave and shape of board.

Realy big waves were classicly rode on guns, which are effectilvy longboards shaped for big waves...

A longboard with the right tail shape and lots of rocker etc can be great in huge waves.

Where they probably cant go too often is barrely pitchy short waves.

i see longboarders out on the biggest swells we get here so this year 15ft+ but i never ever see them on fast hollow waves although im sure a skilled longboarder could do it.

it really comes down to the surfer. I can't get a long-ish board out back in anything over 4ft, where as I can get my shortboard out back much easier. Besides, if you're learning, it's a good rule to not surf if you are struggling to get out back.

Works for me on FF3 and OSx... Works on Safari too. Must be a plug-in problem on your end.
