Localism can be really retarded sometimes

Postby FormosanSurfer » Mon Mar 27, 2006 4:34 pm

There is a break where I live that is a locals only break. In fact, the name of the spot is "locals only" and there is a big rock that says "NO VISITORS, LOCALS ONLY".

The thing is, there aren't many surfers where i live. There are probably 10+ breaks on the coast within an hours drive, and maybe 30-40 surfers. The closest spot (which i'll admit is infested with surfers) is 2 hours away, and most people who surf there drive 1+ hour to get there. So why bother trying to protect the spot? What I really don't get is that the spot isn't that great. I mean, its ok and it can break heavy but there are definitely better spots that no one tries to keep local.

btw, I am allowed to surf there so it's not like I am bitter about there being a spot I can't surf.

I can understand why people do it after seeing the amount of people trying to surf deewhy point at the weekend , people ignoring basic safety rules, dropping in , waiting to try and jump on a wave way past the take off point...If surfing wasnt as popular I dont think there would be a problem.

In surfing some locals hate others surfing "their" beach. I can see why like as mentioned above, people who dont know the basic safety rules and dropping in on surfers, but I think its all crap myself.
Surfing is suppose to be a friendly sociable thing where anyone can surf wherever they like!

i dont mind outsiders surfing my local break but when they paddle straight out on the inside of me and my pals and act like a hero its wrong. if i get snaked any more than one time their gonna cop a mouthful as well. im not into violence because everyone should enjoy the waves and no one ownes em but sum knuckleheads never learn and they gotta pay

Yeah I agree the beach is open to everyone, but I think the localism is good, because it kinda forces the beginners to not migle with the more advanced surfers.

Look if they know the rules of surfing, it's fine, but we have a lot of tourists at my fave break here in Cape Town and they just go there, not having anything else to do, hire a 10ft longboard and see what they can accomplish... By doing this they steal peoples waves, ride into people and so on... You know what i'm talking about.

As usual, its not really anything to do with localism...

It doesnt matter whether you're a local, wandering surfer, or tourist - if you show respect to the ocean, the waves and the surfers around you, it shouldnt matter.

Dropping in or snaking justs sucks - 100%
Being a local doesnt give you any moral high ground here - anyone who does it to anyone else deserves everything they get

I understand the reason that its locals only after yesterday. A car load of idiots showed up with longboards and started surfing there. It was only me and one other guy and the water but these jackasses came right over to our wave and started dropping in on every fleshin' wave. Finally the guy I was surfing with starting yelling at them and told them to go somewhere else.

I don't believe in "locals only" crap. The ocean doesn't belong to anyone.

i don't beleive in the locals only thing, but i hate it when the tourists go hire a 9ft soft top, they can't surf, and get in peoples way, and those things are bloody hard to turn so when you're trying to surf, they're in way and they can't get of the way quick enough then you got to either slow down, then pump really hard to get back at the green water, or exit off the wave!!

well that's my 2 cents...

well the main reason for localsim, is because their not enuf room in the line up for everone, and the people who surf that place should have priority when its good, cas they probably wait for ages until its good, and they dont want random people coming from everywere to surf the waves they wait for.
