Best Place on Oahu to learn to surf?

I've been a snowboard bum in Colorado for a long time, and have been snowboarding all over the country for even longer. I was just wondering how close the two were to each other, and where to learn around Pearl Harbor. I'll soon be stationed there, and the mini waves I caught in Florida gave me more stoke than some of my best days droppin cliffs into chest deep powder. Any help is appreciated...One last thing: I'm going to be buying a shortboard because it will be easier to transport at sea...What's a good brand that will hold up for a while if I happen to be on a sea tour...I dont want to be buying boards every time I stop in surf spots.

P.S. This is a very international form, and I would just like to let people know that many people (in the NAVY) joined to surf, not to kill people. Not all Americans are crazy bastards.

hey what's up , the best place to learn to surf hawaii at least I know of is canoes.. in waikiki.. not far from pearl harbor.. short ride .

summer time is good breaks there and nice size waves winter too. That is if you don't want huge waves and kill yourself. Hawaii you'll have to respect that ocean or else it'll get to ya.

Also if you're traveling alot and want a short board , i would go with a 6'10 .. my opinion. I could pretty much use that board anywhere.

Thanks for the reply, and the info will most definitely prove to be priceless as I progress and make my way to the north shore, although my girl (who used to live in hawaii) tells me it is wicked crowded. Another question, though: im only 5'5, so would a 6'10 shortboard still be ideal, or should i got a little shorter?

well if you 're 5'5 probrably better with a 6'6 I guess or a 6'8 . I learned on a 6'10 and gotten good on it . But I'd say if you just starting to start with longboarding then move to the shorty. If you're an intermediate , go with a 6'6 to a 6'10 , that should be fine in hawaii .
Surfing North shore can be tough , good luck brah. Yyou'll have fun in the summer surf in southshore too .

Just got back from a trip to Oahu. Tried surfing for the first time and I am hooked! Check out a company there called Hawaiian Fire -- they were very safe and the beach we learned on was perfect -- about 30 min from Waikiki.

hawaiian fire is probably a learn to surf thing, since i have never heard of it. there arnt really brands of surfboards.shapers make boards under local company names. i have only seen a few boards that were made outside hawaii, and it goes the same for people in other places, like aussies have never seen a hawaii made board.
i live on oahu and my favorite spot is daimond head, and another secret spot when its up enough otherwise its too rocky, but i cant tell you about that one anyway. waikiki is good for beginners. why dont you just ask your girlfriend, she should know some spots.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the replies I've gotten on learning to surf on oahu...Although i 86'ed the Navy, I'm working and saving to get there either way...even if that means hangin out in cali for a while. I won't have the chance to go international, but i hear the surf sucks in the persian gulf anyway. So thanks to all, and hope for peace.

whoa, you dont have to wait to go to hawaii to surf if you live in cali...or maybe i read it wrong lol....there is some great surf spots in cali. i used to live there and let me tell you, dont wait, i loved living and surfing in cali.
