It's got to be a proper hoot. Nothing half arsed.

Claiming a wave has to be the lamest thing ever, unless you really are getting pitted at pipe on the gnarliest day of the year.

i think my fellow surfers hoots have helped me catch waves i normally wouldn't. the other day there was this head high one that i didnt see coming, i whipped around pretty fast but i still didnt catch it. somebody near me yelled CATCH IT WOOOO HOOT HOOOT. and i rode that b**** like itd never been riden before.

I find it's also good to hoot and shout when someone is undecided as to whether or not to go on a wave, especially if it's a set wave or a possible close-out. A well timed shout is usually enough to send them over the edge, with quite often disasterous consquences!
