Ohh that brings back memories. Nothing like getting out there and looking like a rolling log.

Ya feel like such a kook. Just keep practicing. You will get it and soon it becomes very comfortable.

Ah, many times I've found myself under water and letting my toes enjoy the breeze. Stick with it, I had trouble on a longboard, so it must be hell on a 6 footer

Me too (found it easier that is, not being weird. That's your affair). I think its cos on a longboard you sit above the water so can easily overbalance while on a shortboard you sink a bit and so you're floating IN the water.

It's all about balance. you need to understand where your center is. If you have trouble sitting on the board, you're going to have way more trouble catching a wave and standing because you don't know your board very well.
And when I say 'center' it's not necessarily the middle of the board, as the tail is usually a bit more buoyant than the front. But just like paddling and standing, a half and inch can make a big difference.

One sign that your not a total kook is when you can sit relaxed on your board without flopping over.

Oh that does bring back memories.
I think its way easier to sit on a longboard, then a shortboard thou.

Just sit on your board, about 3/7 down towards the tail. increase or decrease the distance from the tail depending on how comfortable you are. you can also hold onto the rails, and kick your feet in a circular motion to turn around away from the waves to catch it. I had a hard time learning this too, but as everybody said, just keep practicing.

same here, i would always tip over on my 7'0, but after i started using my 5'11" i always managed to sit up right.

Try it with your eyes closed just as a set is approaching!

It's a learned skill just like most of surfing. Keep it up, don't be intimidated and you'll get there.
