hey guys, im new, my names zach, and i surf the great lakes(so just please spare me the "you cant surf there, blah blah blah" because you can.

but back to my question. I'm just transferring from a 7'6 softop funboard, to a 6'7 shortboard. the waves were pretty decent yesterday when i first got to try, probably about waist to chest high.

im getting up, and riding, but i cant seem to turn or ride the actual wave, i seem to only be able to ride the whitewater. is this something with my technique or maybe just the break at which i'm surfing?

more about experience, i wouldnt get a shorter board just yet, maybe transfer to a mal? its an absolute necessity to be able to ride the open face of the wave on a shortboard

just try moving your body weight in the general direction of the face. as more times goes on you'll be able to feel whats best and do that

a mate lent me 'Unsalted' very good film!! I think 'Batman' on this forum is a lake surfer.

As for the original post - hmmm, I dont know where you surf so cant comment on the break so I would suggest with perserving (sp?) with your surfing and watch the other guys out there to see what they are doing. Then practice, practice, practice!

thanks guys!
yeah, i got out today, some smaller stuff, but i got the hang of turning and dropping in to the face. i'm starting to get the hang of the shortboard now!

oh and thirdcoastsurfshop.com has some good pictures, and info about lake surfing. the waves arent quite of the same caliber, but its warmer, and there are never crowds, :P!

Ok, I see you have been on Third Coast, so you are doing good there. If you want more of the Canadian aspect of lake surfing, check out www.originsurf.ca

Yes I am a lake surfer.

surfsc77, if you check on this forum I have posted some pics of lake surfing. It can get REALLY big some days. Last week for example there was 20ft waves in Lake Superior.

Cool, we are looking at late today, with a possible good clean up tommorow. Probably going to head either to the east side of Huron, or Lake ontario. If it holds until saturday, I will be near lake erie, so I might check that out.

yeah, i dunno if you saw the charts, but we just had high overhead, somethin like 12 foot sets, thursday evening. it was really chopped by the wind, but by morning, we had clean, head-high rolling sets, perfect.

jerk...*shakes fist*....

It was building all day for us on thursday too. Then an insane storm hit. at night. When I went out for DP, the bottom had dropped out from under it and was flat.....
