Shortboard/Fish Standing Up - Missing Something?

I know how to stand up on a shortboard, but I think I am going about it the wrong way? This is how I though you are supposed to do it...
1. Paddle until you feel the wave lift and push you (you know the feeling)
2. Put your trailing foot (back foot) on the board; like your jack knifing the board
3. Pull your leading foot (front foot) straight forward into position
4. Turn and rise
I was poking around and it seems like I might be doing this wrong...to me this seems like the only logical way. I've looked at some vids and it seems like their doing the same thing but IDK. Thanks for the help!

It's not a one, two three step thing.
Lay on the ground. Put your hands flat on the ground next to you, just about even with your shoulders, like you were doing a pushup. Hands should be a bit further back than a typical push-up, though, to get closer to your center of gravity.
Now, push up with your hands and chest, swinging your feet in one motion underneath you, trying to not use your knees.
that's what you should be doing. And doing it without thinking about doing it. Because if you're thinking about doing it, you'll take too long to get up and not make it.

i used to have real trouble but i found that being more smooth and not jerking the board during the pop-up solved everything, now it just sorta happens
http://www.podsurf.tv/
in the learning section theres a bit on pop-up, most of it youll know already but i thought the pop-up part was helpful, plus its trent munro
and phil macdonald
im sure they no a thing or two about a thing or two
thats my 2cents

There is an old saying, you think and you stink. Hope that helps.
99% of getting it is, to be ready..like being in the right place and feeling the wave rushing behind you.

it's not so much of me thinking about it... it's that I pretty much do that in all one fell swoop... I went out yesterday and did what I had posted and could get up and ride fine ... this is the way I've always done it, and not really gave too much thought to it. I didn't know if there was another way. I was crawling some of the other threads about this and it seemed that there was another way...
hey, it works and I do just fine so I think i'll keep doing what i've been doing

This question always makes me laugh. I find it very difficult to describe how I get to my feet cos it just happens.
At the end of the sesh when I'm getting tired I know I'm not doing it right though!!

Which foot do you guys bring up first? I see some people do it with their back and some with their front first.

youre supposed to swing your legs through as you push your chest up and plant them at the same time. thats what i do anyway and it works.
