Hey 8) I am a 19 year old girl from Norway and i was wondering, i have really wanted to learn how to surf. but am i to old to start now? It has been something i have wanted to do for some time now. In Norway there are few places to surf and where i live (karmoy) is one of them. I am also taking a trip to spain (mallorca) and if i find a place where they teach surfing i would defently trie it out! Xoxo NorwayGirrl

Hey,

Not much surfing in Majorca I'm afraid unless you are really lucky. In my experience you either need a big storm blowing through or just be in the right place at the right time as most spots in the Med only work 5-6 times a year.

For what it's worth, I don't think 19 is too old to start at all. Sure, you may not become a pro starting now, but you'll still get plenty of enjoyment and personal fulfilment out of it. get in there and have a blast.

One tip: For Norway, get yourself a BL**DY good wetsuit before you start! :)

Cheers

ROFL! :D

Sorry, but I'm 39 and I'm just planning on learning to surf, so I don't think you're quite "over the hill" yet! :)

(PS to anyone else: Yes, I'm having a mid-life crisis. What's your excuse?! :D )

Graham,

Good on you mate. I'm assuming you'll be opting for the civilised form of surfing and go for a nice 9 foot something board?

Ignoring the possible bait to get into a controversial discussion... ;-)

In all honesty I have no idea! I'm planning on learning from Surf South West in Croyde, so I'll start with whatever they recommend, then see how it goes.

next time you'll go down south, i recommend you go to the canary islands instead of mallorca. it's PERFECT for surfing, i learned on lanzarote, it was like a wave factory, but i heard fuerteventura and other islands are equally good. the water is warm and the waves consistent and perfect for beginners. they have really cheap flights down there, just don't forget your sunscreen.
by the way i just started with 40, i still suck, but i'm having fun!

The only thing you are too old to learn, is walking...

I learned to surf when I was just a kid at 45, so I think you still have some time to learn. :-)

Learning on a longboard, especially something like a softop, will help. I learned on a 9'6" Softop that floats really well and helped me learn to stand up. Look for small waves, or even white water to learn on.

The most important thing is to keep on trying and have fun!

For Mallorca, the best beach for catching a few waves is Cala Mesqueda, near Arta. Best chance is to go down there every fortnight on the full moon. Watch the rips if your a beginner. I've surfed it at around 8 ft there, and it was great, but very rare.
