help standing up

Postby gf123 » Sat Jan 27, 2007 8:36 pm

i started surfing 1-2 weeks ago... I had a friend teach me how to paddle, duck dive etc but i pretty much self taught me how to stand up.. which i think i did wrong..

i mean at first i tried to get on my knees then stand up but i couldnt do it

so i tried the push up thing and now i can stand up sometimes.. so i was wondering if theres a site or something to help?

also.. should my feet touch the board? cuz im doing the pop up thing with my knees

Have a look at http://extreme.com/tricksandtips/
Click on surf and the 2nd video.

Also have a look at previous threads such as

Beginner - problems popping up... serious frustration! which has some diagrams.

Then practice makes perfect. Try doing so many pop ups each day with your board on the floor. (remove the fins)

I woodn't suggest doing pop ups on the floor with your board. You'll put a lot of needless pressure dents in it. You don't have to have a board to practice pop ups on the floor.

also i'd like to kno how do you popup when your feet overhang?

Is it the same just using your knees to thrust you up from the prone position?

You really should try to not use your knees when poping up. When I bought my first shortboard, I put a traction pad on it, so I'd know where my back foot should be during the pop up.

Just push up with your hands near your ribs and pull your feet/legs forward.
NO knees.

Doing lots of push-ups will help you do your pop-ups a lot faster and smoother...

Your knees shouldnt touch the board - it is bad technique, very slow, looks bad etc.

As Driftingalong said, just practice doing push-ups and stand-ups on the floor (mark out the size of your board on the floor or use a cardboard cut-out to practice foot placement).

Then you need to put more power through your arms so you can swing your legs all the way up. Your feet (or your knees) shouldnt really have anything to do with it until you're standing. If your feet are hanging off the back of the board then you're trying to learn on a board thats too small for you. Much easier on a large board where you can push up from your feet to begin with.

The way I do it (not saying this is perfect, but it works for me) is to pop up through my arms, swing my right (back) foot forward first so its above the tail and then kinda pivot around my right leg and bring my left (front) foot forward. But I dont mean leap onto your back foot - when I say pivot around it, the weight is still on the arms.

Practise practise practise....

My feet overhang my board and i dont use my knees at all.

This works for me:
Get on the floor, push up with your hands (have them down near your ribs), as you push up twist your body slightly (clockwise if you are regular) so that you knee/leg can come up (without it touching the board/your body) and then place your back foot on the board.
Going back to the knee, the twist is important. Dont bring the knee straight up - its easier if its sort of on the side - the board/your body wont get in the way and your foot will be facing outwards when placed on the board.

If the nose is sinking when you stand up you:
a) have too small a board for your size/weight
b) are putting too much weight forward
c) are standing too far forward.

If your nose is sinking whilst paddling shift your weight further back, so the nose is clear of the water, you don't want to make things harder for yourself.

You're feet are supposed to overhang on smaller boards, so no worries there.
