Surfing Waves

Hi There,

A friend and I were thinking of learning to surf, but we are not sure which equipment we should buy. It probably sound stupid but we don't want to spend our money in the wrong way.

Any ideas?

Coming from a fellow learner, I'd say take lessons and rent for awhile if you can. The lessons seemed to help me to just be able to feel the wave and stand up the first day out. It's kinda nice to rent the equipment too because I don't have to worry about it or making the wrong decision and can just focus on learning. 'Course, if you are lucky enough to be able to go alot, you'll probably have to plunk down your cash sooner than me on some equipment. Maybe your teacher could give you a heads up on buying or your local surf shop? Good luck with it all and have fun!

hey yeah i agree surf lessons then hire... i mean it's unlikely but you could surf for the first time and think 'this sux' like i say it's unlikely but posible. And i recomend you get lessons soon if you can because prices will go up for tourists in summer and plus it will be very busy in the summer...

You might want to do a search on here too once you start getting an idea of something you want to buy. There's probably a wealth of info here on just what you'll want.

also your local surf shop is very helpfull on where to surf, what board to buy.
definitely rent and take a lesson or 2. Its much safer and will let you decide if you really want to learn how to surf or not.

It wood help to know where your planning on learning.

I'm not to big on the idea of renting a first board. Your first time out is probably not going to be a fun time. If you rent a board its too easy to just give up. I'd buy a nice used board in the 8 to 9 foot range, a leash, some wax, and a wet suit if needed.

If I wood have rented a board my first time out it might have been my last time also.

Surfing isn't an easy thing to do. You have to learn to lay and sit on the board. Paddling isn't as easy as it looks either. Getting outside can be a challenge in itself depending on where you live. I think the main thing to do is just have fun, and don't be too hard on yourself.

If you do give it a try, and stick with it. You'll never regret it, and you'll always remember your first real wave.
