well do what ever you feel comfortable with..but i would suggest you keep closer to the shore while you are improving and when you have anough confidence to challenge the bigger waves go out back.

If you can get outback get out back, your probably better finding a smaller more forgiving open faced wave. Can't remember exactly where you said you were from, i think it was down the South West somewhere but find a nice mellow beach break and give it a go, worst thing your gonna do is fall of your board

I was gonna write something along the lines of 'if you can get out back, you should be okay out there' but...

make sure you can get back in!

If you use a rip to get out, you might find yourself a long way out in amongst waves you cant catch.

Or worse, you paddle out thinking 'woah, this is great, Im getting out back real easy' then realise that its the offshore wind blowing you out there and now you cant paddle back (into the wind) :?

As long as you're not silly, if you can get there, try and surf it :D
But if you're paddling strength/technique isnt all that great then you might struggle to catch the waves.
