what size wave?

what size wave should i start on?

big enough so it will push you and you can catch it.
small enough so it wont scare you and wont pummel you too much.
try surfing whitewater first!!

when i try whitewater i always stall

It depends on the white water. If its pumping out back, like at least 4ft+, yes Dec UK surf, catch the white stuff. If its below that paddle out and give it a go.

.....or you may be positioned a little incorrectly. I think if you stall you have to get further forward but not so much that you pearl.

I'd echo the positioning.

With little forward motion, whitewater should be able to push anyone for a bit, if not into shore, provided you're positioned right on the board.

i can catch white water if its any bigger than 3 inches, but just not stand on it, only lie flat, and thats on a shortboard

Longboard I can 'ride' 10inches(or less) or so of whitewater.

You have to be moving close to the wave speed, you have to be in position on the board & have it flat/trimmed. Having the tail dug in etc wont get you going.
