Get badly bruised hip bones

Postby aliceg » Mon Jun 21, 2004 3:05 pm

I get bruises on my hip bones where they press onto my board whilst I'm paddling and when I first jump on. It happens because my hip poke out further than my stomach and after a few days surfing it gets pretty bad. Has anyone got any clever ideas about how to stop it happening? (other than get fatter)

Yep - I can recommend my "soon to be patented" method again....

cut out two 4 or 5 inch circles of thick wetsuit material (a shop should be able to supply you with off cuts) from an old wetsuit or use similar thick foamy stuff.

Then cut two smaller holes in the middle of each piece - about 1inch in diameter.

Now every time you put your wetsuit on - put one of these bits of neoprene down the front over each hip-bone.

hey preso - no more sore hips.

I came up wth this for my wife and it works a treat.[/i]

put some extra padding in my suit - helped a bit but not enough without looking a bit mutated! Thought there might be another way around it but thanks for your suggestion anyway.

i got those when i first started surfing. evetually they went away on their own. maybe my skin toughened up. on the area it would happen my skin looks funny, its hard to nottice but it looks almost like scar tissue from burns in the area where my bruises were.

it's just part of surfing. i don't think it will cause any permanent damage but if you want to wear a padded suit you can probably avoid some of the brusing.

Put some meat on them bones. (the women will like it too). or just suck it up cause you will get used to it and after about 3 months of surfing (or less) it will stop happening. (just like stomach rash).

don't put on weight to try to stop the bruising!! it doesn't work! I'm already overweight (not too bad, but i am) and i get huuuuge bruises on my hips, really really bad like. i guess having more flesh means there's more flesh to bruise, lol.

lol

Funny thread.

That hasn't happened me in ages (it'll wear off!) but what does happen (slightly on the same topic...) is that my right knee becomes really irritated and swollen. When I was at the doctor he just said that I had fluid in my knee and there was nothing much I could do about it. My brother has the same problem from playing rugby and takes anti-inflammatories which personally I don't fancy having to take everytime after surfing.

I bought a longboard a few months back and it's even more irritated after that as it's so much wider my knee is constantly rubbing off the board. -It can get pretty sore and interfers with my surfing (esp. the longboard).

Is there ANYTHING I can do about it? :? :( :x

Newbie?

IrishGirl - the only reason you're getting these is because you're obviously in over your head. If you were a typical surfer like myself you'd be in the waves every day of the week and you'd have become immune to the bruising that you've become accustomed to.

My 2 cents.

Wayne.

i get all kinds of injuries when i surf and i never notice until a couple of hours after i get out. i got a huge graze on my elbow from last week surfing and i always badly hurt my foot/ankle. OH and yes i get the bruised hips thing as well.

that wasnt really much help really was it?

It affects us bboards worse so beleave me its not bad! we get it on the hips and ribs. esp when your taking heavy landings.

if your surfin regly you tend to get used to it but the ideas mentions previosly are all valid. its up to u if u can deal with it.
