Just want to say what an awesome webbsite this is. I've been surfing for three months in Byron Bay, but just felt a bit daft asking questions about what seems like obvious stuff to really experienced surfers.

This site answers all my questions and i didn't feel daft in the slightest!!
Thanks guys :D

I'm thinking of going to Bali in January to try to do some beginner surfing. I know this is in the middle of rainy season, but I have heard that it is still nice and that the waves are sometimes softer and better for beginners to learn on. Is this true? If January is no good, then is October an okay time?

Thanks!

Well for all the beginner surfers you should take a surfing lesson. If you are ready to make that step and you are in the Huntington Beach or Newport beach areas you can get a great lesson from the folks at yougosurf that is who i would recommend

The lessons here are free...
....time in the water is the best lesson you can ever take.

This site is the friendliest most helpful group I have ever found on the web....keep the good vibe!!
Keep the stoke and stay wet.

Ok so this is probably a dumb question. But can you wax your board in between sessions? Or does it have to be dry? I know a wax comb works but I am still curious.

Hey guys,

Great articles. A lot of really useful information. I found them interesting to read. Also I found getting a surf lessons quite a fun way to learn. My instructor helped me with my pop up alot and taught me how to catch the unborken waves. <edit> in Lahinch in Ireland. will be in Margaret river in Oz soon... anyone know a place to get good lessons there?

Thanks for the links Surf Patrol. Much more fun reading these than working :D

Perl / Pearl
This is a common term describing when a person buries the nose of their surfboard in the wave and goes "over the falls." It's often referred to by the actual surfer as "@#%%@#@!"

Ha! I can totally relate to this!

You didn't include the Turtle Roll..This was my life saver since I'm a newbie with a foam board....This saved my energy for actual surfing vs fighting the oncoming waves.

I've added the turtle roll link above, the article was put together by info from forum members, and there's plenty of forum topics with advice.

new to surfing this year, I love this forum and how useful it is. :) It's not just the surfing but the community that makes it so special. I was surfing in Normandy beaches this summer, probably not the coolest go to destination for surf but the waves weren't too big so I could handle them #newb. I also gave paddle boarding a go at Omaha beach and witnessed my first 'life save' a kid got caught in a rip (had no idea what it was) another paddle boarder and life guard hauled him back in. Anyway :blah: love it, love the forum and even started my own blog I was that inspired .
