Surfboards and Bus

I am a just beginning to surf and has just surfed three times and I do really like surfing.
But the problem is that I dont have a car and I have to take the bus to the beach (which is like 2 hours away and always full); and I dont think I could fit a 9 foot funboard (I'm 5"11 and 175 Lbs or 79kgs ) board in bus.
So I am thinking of getting a shorter board like maybe something around 6 to 6.5 feet.
What do you guys think?
Has anyone here learned surfing from a short n light board instead of a soft/funboard?
What do you have to say?
Thanks

How far is your favorite break? I ride my bike 15 miles to work and it became pretty easy after about a week. I can get to work without breaking a sweat if I take it easy. Get yourself one of these and you\'ll be all set:

Does the bus have a rack on the roof you can just throw the board up on? Get a longboard travel bag and bungee cord it to the top of the bus.

hi im in aussie and they let all us groms here use the busses with our surfboards. im learning on a 6" but im preety short but i find it very reliable and easy to carry around somthing that big....... try it out and see if you like it, i live around about 30 mins from the beach and on a bus its 45 mins but just ask the bus driver if you can leave it up the front.

Yup I used to haul my big ass 7'6 mal on the bus from Syndey city to Bondi very regularly - no hassle at all, but had to stand up and sometimes move the board to let people get off - got a bit of damage to the tail as a result.
No extra fare though, and if you're staying all day, not a problem.
Also took the train to Cronulla a few times with the old beauty, never a problem - never a dull moment!

No its not!!
Theres a few foldable longboards around, there not too bad, I know there available in the US and Australia. Have one maker in a mag at home, leme se if I can dig it out, ends up very portable in a bag.
