Shark Safe Northern California Beach for Beginner Surfers

Postby Newbie_Surfer » Tue Jun 01, 2004 11:45 pm

Is there such a thing? My daughter and I want to start surfing, but it seems that all surfing beaches have this hazard. Are they any particular beaches that are a little safer than others?

I realize getting attacked by a GW, probably is as great as getting hit by lightening, but still a concern.

Thx
D

Hi there,
I usually surf around Pacifica...Linda Mar beach specifically..I think it's RELATIVELY shark freee if there is such a thing. All you need to worry about the crowds

Stay away from Stinson, Bolinas area if you are really concerned..good luck!

SHARKS

Postby solesurfr1 » Sat Jun 19, 2004 3:51 pm

You are all terribly WRONG! You all surf in the GOD DAMN Red Triangle! Do you even know what that is? Let me tell you a little secret about surfing Indo Mar, there has been a sighting of a great white shark out by the point. This shark is about 12 to 15 feet long and goes by the name of Pedro, named after Pedro Point. Pedro has been coming around for the last 10 years. If you surf Linda Mar often, then you can remember, in the last year or so, there has been at least four headless seals that have washed up on the beach on the north end and one as low as in front of the pump house. Yes, these seals were 4 and 6 feet long, pretty damn big if you ever had the chance to paddle by one. Just don't be fooled there are sharks out there, just because you don't see them it doesn't mean they don't exist. Surf's up!

shark sighting

Postby Just Chris » Wed Jun 23, 2004 10:26 pm

I have been surfing at Linda Mar for the last 10 years, since I was 8 years old. I boogie boarded until I was 13, because thats when I saw my first shark. It was definetly a great white, but I dont know if it was Pedro. It popped up almost directly up from Taco Bell about 50 yards away from me, and about 200 yards out to sea. really Scary. I left a message with the Coast Guard. I stayed away from the beach for about a year, and then came back when I started to learn to surf.
