Grabbing Rails on pop up

Postby Guest » Sun Jul 30, 2006 2:21 am

Hey guys I just have a question about this. I tend to grab both rails as I'm popping up m when the waves get over waist high. I only grab them for 1-2 seconds then proceed to drop in. I know it's bad to do but If I don't do it I nose dive, any help?

I thought it was bad as well so I'm trying to stop but grabbing the rails seem to make popping up so much easier. I'm not sure if its bad or not yet, I'll just monitor this post to see other peoples opinions.

I think the only reasons that it is 'bad' are...

Your hands are slightly lower than if they're on the deck, and your arms are slightly spread - which should make popping up less effificient. But if you're popping up fine then why worry?

If your hands are on the rails and you slip, you land face first on the deck without any chance of recovery. Ouch.

I dont think it matters all that much. Im not even sure where I put my hands most of the time...

Yeah, I always grab the rails.. sometimes my hand slips and I end up scrambling and it's 50-50 if I blow it. But, hey - after 25 years, it still works for me well enough.

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you're going to try and go pro or compete. Then I'd start to practice the 'right' way.

Well thanks alot I really appreciate it. I heard about the slipping thing but whenever I slip I just bail and jump off. Waves were head high yesterday and it was so scary on the pop up that I had to grab the rails for like 2 seconds but it was so fun :P.

lol some people prefer popping up with their hands flat down on the deck as they do the push up

I think thats what they are on about anyway

thats odd, i know occy uses one hand flat and one on the rail, and i got a mate who takes off like that, but only cos he smashed his arm up and has a plate and screws in it so it cant take as much weight

do whichever works until you cant tell what you're doing anymore. i dunno which method i use because my pop is so instinctive now. also it should be a quick process so that explains why some people cant tell which.

SS,

I mostly agree... With one difference. I think people focus too much on the popup being quick. I think it should be smooth. Smooth, natural and instinctive... Yes, beautiful. Then the speed of the thing comes on it's own.

If there's one person on the planet who needs no lessons in how to do a smooth, natural, instinctive and beautiful pop-up.... Its surferdudescarborough

Rofl! I'm not sure if I should continue popping up in push up position or grab rails since I used to do that before. I guess I"ll just keep practicing so I'll forget about it.
