Hi all, :)

I'm not even a newbie, haven't even started surfing (I've windsurfed in the past).

I'm 29, in good physical condition, a strong swimmer and have a good sense of balance, just... never surfed before ;-) and have always wanted to.

I live in Shanghai and want to go to the Philippines for 2-3 days in July to surf for the first time. Is Cloud 9 a good place for someone who's never surfed before? (is a weekend - it's all i have at the mo- enough to even get me to stand on the board for more than 1 second?) Would another SE Asian or Philippino location be better?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I think that would be the same as going to learn in Teahoopoo or Pipeline???
I'm sure when you go, there will be some breaks nearby to learn on.

Take it slowly and gently.

Or use lubricant.

:D

*edit*

Can you tell I only read the title of the thread, and not the post? :)

I've never been to asia before so I wouldn't know but it would definitely pay you to go to a surf school if you can and learn on a large board, also make sure they're qualified in some way, safety and experience that's the key.

The guys I know that have started by going to a school are that bit more advanced than everyone else.

Just a thought.

Sorry for the late reply,

Waves in Siargao Cloud9 will probably be too big for a beginner. Try the spots in La Union or Zambales first.

There are a couple of surf schools and camps in the Philippines, most notably Surf Camp in La Union.

Isn't there a second break on the other side of the point of Cloud 9 that's a small to medium size left? Or is that Cloudbreak?
