from pop-up to...

Have I developed another bad habit?

I used to go to one knee then up which worked about 10% of the time. I can now pop up and although it works for me about 5% of the time it's getting better.

The other day however I started paddling then whilst lying on my board I held the rails and put my back foot on the board (I'm quite supple!) and pushed up with my arms and my back leg, kinda like a tripod!!!! then all I had to do was position my front foot. It's not very elegant but I can stand up this way probably 20% of the time, and it's just as quick as popping up.

Is it a bad habit I should quash? :-)

In my humble opinion, I think you should aim to pop up with both feet landing on the board at around the same time. If you use your back leg and your hands to pop up, you'd be doing more of a duck dive than a pop up, and you'll decrease speed. I think practise is the best solution, because you will find your way of doing it. Hope this helps!

Um... those numbers aren't very high... they should be 99% or 100% :?

If you're only making one in five pop-ups, then you need a lot more practise, and you should get out of the habit of using feet/knees right now.

Practise in your living room, do lots of press ups, watch other people, get into the water as often as you can. It shouldnt take long to be able to pop up reasonably well and anything other than popping straight up will take longer and not be as effective which will end in disaster (or at least an inelegant wipe-out) when you try to make the drop.

Practise practise practise....

Thanks guys,

I thought as much, I shall stop trying to take short cuts.

A friend of mine recently made me a good tool, he drew round my sufboard and cut one out of chipboard so I have my very own pop-up practice board that I can use at home.

That's excellent. Use it loads! It does work.... I know

Had similar problems, got the same advice from people on here, practised on my cutout board, and now pop-ups are no problem.

Stick with it! You'll be so pleased when it works!!!!

the thing is, when you get past the popping up stage and ride down the wave, you will forget how you pop up, i know i do, i think more about tricks on the wave than poping up, so if it works do it and get past poping up

You need to sit on your soft bits (backside) and then use your good hand to stroke alternatively either side.. of the board.. to get you going. Don't worry about that thunderous sound those guys will stop laughing soon.

No seriously tho. You need to even the strength up in both hands equally otherwise you'll only catch those waves that go in circles. What you should do is go skating again and break the other hand.

Wow so they have pimps in the philippines too? :o

yeah

Anything wrong with your arm?
Can you add a little more detail to what is "limited" in your hand?
