Beginner surfing in Indonesia

Postby Guest » Sat May 15, 2004 5:51 am

Hello!

So this summer me and the wife are heading to Indonesia for 4 -6 weeks and want to learn to surf. As total beginners (my wife has caught a few waves but never stood up and I have never surfed before...ever  ), where would you all suggest we begin?

Where can we find good beginners breaks in Indonesia?

Also, we were planning on spending 3 weeks (solid) learning. Both of us are competent swimmers...how long does it generally take before you catch your first standing wave?

If anyone can help us out, I would appreciate it loads :D

ok peace - cheers!

surfing indonesia

hi.

i went down to bali and lombok a couple of summers back. so many places to surf and surfer i think your best bet is to just get over there and go where the wind takes ya. i am a beginning surfer and found the breaks on Kuta and Legian were good to learn but the area is very touristy so after a couple of days you will prob want to move on.

found pretty good "beginner/intermediate" waves in Mendewi, which is on the south/west coast bali.

surfed the gili islands too and the waves were not so bad to learn on some days. some days they were really big (not sure how big, but big enough!), but just going out and paddling around is fun and you learn alot.

the locals were all very nice for the most part

have fun.

nice one n.lights! the internet and guide book make all the braeks down there (bar kuta & legian) sound too heavy - reefs & huige waves...! so your advice comes as great news brother. we plan to buy boards in Bali but dont want to hang around there too long (more a fan of the wild places).

Anyway, keep the advice coming!

beginner surfing in Indonesia

Ikut dong aku juga peng'n ke sono!

I think you should be able to find safe beginner waves on Kuta Beach in Bali.
Plenty of surfing in Indonesia but Kuta, Legion, Seminyak area have waves breaking over sand which I think is what you want.

Jaded travelers who want to impress you with their worldlyness will shun Kuta, but your there to have a good time and not impress the Joneses. You don't have to stay in Kuta.

Last time I was there I was in Denpasar for a week, not much for tourist amenities, but after I finished my business every day I took a cab to Legion (north of kuta) which took about 20 minutes rented a board, goofed around for a couple of hours, heading back to Denpasar when I was done.

There are Indonesian surfing guides, and the lonely planet guide to Bali has a surfing supplement.
