Hello!

I am a 24 year old female who has just got into surfing. I know that a mini mal is the way forward for my first board but do they come in different sizes?

What size is good to start on?!

p.s am I to old to start this?!

Hi there,

If you can swim you can surf - you are never too old!! My Dad is 60 this year and I am taking him for his first surfing experience next month!

Mini-mals are good boards, not only for beginners. I chopped in my 6'6 thruster for a mini-mal after 15 years of surfing and I charge better now than I ever did!

Board size depends on height and weight. Minimals range from around 7ft to 9ft, then you're in to longboard territory. Personally I would look for something fairly short around 7 1/2 to 8 ft - this will be big and stable enough to learn on, but it will also allow you to progress and will probably last you throughout your surfing career (if you don't break it) - by that I mean you may buy yourself a shortboard and keep the mini-mal for small days, just to have fun on!

Glad to see more ladies are taking up surfing. Keep at it!

To prove you're never too old, one of the pioneers of modern surfing Woody Brown at 89 years old!
