Cross stepping advice

Keen to hear any cross stepping tips anyone may have. Pretty sure I just shuffle rather than the deliberate, well placed steps you see in the vids. I also find it harder stepping back in time to turn back into the wave.
Anyway, really enjoying my surfing but keen to take this next step! Thanks!
