The "flickout"?

Postby XiloRider » Thu Jun 25, 2020 6:19 am

I was reading the article "How to Handle Closeouts," and one of the techniques it mentioned was the flickout.

So apparently, a wave closes out then you bottom turn and get over the whitewater somehow? Is this correct? Article didn't elaborate much.

Is there somebody on here who can do these? Some tips would be cool. Don't see much about it on online, video-wise.

Thanks!

The flick out and the reverse flick out are an ancient manouvre of the longboard tribe, they have been rendered extinct by the leash.

The flick out involve immediate and rapiid body torque at a bottom turn and then driving and flicking and pushing the board up through the closing out lip and high and then landingthe board behind the wave, you surface after being smacked by the falling wave face and swim to your board, good timing is needed , and can give the rider enough time tomsubmerge and go through the wave.
Bad timing sees two things, your board doesn‘t penetrate or go above the lip and is hurled shoreward, it may also be hurled straight back at your face, just before you get smacked by the lip. Surfers at theback of the wave are subjected to aerial bombardment of flicked out boards.
nasty behaviours also encompassed flick outs at drop ins , cruise missile style.

Flickouts also died with the early leashes which were made with surgical rubber tubing, they were often tied through a hole drilled into the fin, this guaranteed that at whatever speed you flicked out at , the upside down fin exposed board was hurtling back at you at the same speed!
Leashes also had a finite stretch meaning they could not get enough distance to clear the wave, elastic lip launch return.

The reverse flick out was a severe twist flick out using body torque on you back hand.

I’m not sure if this is the maneuver but here is what I think it is or if not then another way to exit a wave. It’s not a maneuver for crowded waves. You make a strong bottom turn and leaning back you shoot the board up the wave falling back off the end of the board. So first thing is to be sure no one else is in the area then to make sure it’s not 100 percent vertical so the board doesn’t fall back on you and make sure it’s not completely perpendicular to the wave so the board doesn’t get pushed back onto you by the wave. This was used much more often prior to surf leashes but I still do this rarely in certain circumstances however I often surf alone When I do this I also stay underwater until I’m sure the board has fallen back down to the side of me and isn’t going to be smacked into my head by the next wave
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

it was also common to surface with your arms wrapped around your head, a good flick out could still be coming down when you surfaced behind the wave

I still do this when I’m making a bottom turn and find the wave is closing out and I can’t get up the face to either kick out or do a floater or tuck in for a close out coverup
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Oh cool. Now I have some sort of idea what it is. Thanks!

I think I saw Wingnut do this in one of his videos.
