Order of Progression

So I've been surfing on and off for a while. I can pop up and ride on unbroken waves down the line, frontside and backside. Now I want to get more serious about this but realize that I have no clear goals. Guys need something to "aim" at.

In that vein, what's the "correct" sequence of moves to learn to get to a solid intermediate, or even low-advanced, level? I guess I need to work on turns. Is the bottom turn the next thing I should learn? What about after that? Etc. Etc.

Thanks!

So when you start to paddle for and catch the wave, which way is the board facing ? Towards the beach or Parallel to the beach ?

When you are riding the wave down the line, are you riding straight towards the beach or more parallel to the beach ?

So if you can catch the wave going towards the beach and then end up riding across the wave now parallel to the beach, how were you able to do that ? By Bottom Turning. So you already know how right ?

Have a look at the surf simply ‘tree of knowledge’. You seem like you are probably toward the top of level 2/bottom of level 3, but there are probably bits at level 2 you haven’t done

Anyway, it’s a well thought through progression that might be if benefit. Of course it’s not just about doing everything, you also have to learn how to do things better. So a progression might be a better bottom turn rather than having a poor bottom turn and also a poor top turn

I'm mostly about a 45 degree angle to the beach, more or less. I just take off at an angle mostly on small waves. No real bottom turn, though I think I do weak ones "accidentally" sometimes. Not like the "real," sharp ones I see the good surfers doing.

I am a believer in learning to do a better bottom turn. To do this you need to learn to take off deeper on the wave so there are two things you need to learn, taking a later drop and a better bottom turn. It's difficult to learn to do a better bottom turn if you don't learn to put yourself in a better position on the wave. So just try to take off a little deeper than you would normally and to make the wave you have to make a better bottom turn. All the other maneuvers can be set up with a good bottom turn but if you are on a weak part of the wave it's much more difficult to do a strong bottom turn. Taking off a little deeper is something you can continue to do if you want to improve your surfing.
