Starting out surfing - what do I need?

Alright guys,

I've had 3 surfing lessons now and I have decided I would like to take it up. With the waves closest to me (Brighton Beach, Sussex, UK), what kind of board do you reckon I would need to start out on (board, leash, fins etc.) I'm 5'9 and 65kg, have a good sense of balance and have a budget of anything below £500 ($650).

Thanks lads.

Look for a second hand 8ft minimal or 9ft+ longboard. Don't go too mad and buy brand new because you may find you will progress fairly quickly and change boards quite often as you get better.

Also buying second hand will give you more money for wetsuits. You will want a summer and winter wetsuit as it gets a bit fresh.

The waves in Brighton are, frankly, pretty rubbish windswell, hence I would buy a 9ft longboard to maximise the rides that you can get and the progress you can make.

Ha, Paddy, we're the same weight and height. There is no hope for you.
All kidding aside, we are the same weight and height.

I've taught many people to surf and maintain to this day that a 9 foot long board is the correct board for a beginner (learner). As an aside, I ride a long board. I began surfing at age 44 or 45, which is many years ago. Surely, I started on a long board. I never left it behind. It is my favorite way to surf.

Keep the stoke!!!! :surfing:
