If you're trying to keep fit for Surfing, try and make sure you exercise the right muscle groups.
By far the best exercise is obviously swimming, in increases your confidence in the water at the same time as building your paddling muscles. Make sure you do front crawl and try not using your legs (apart from for balance).
Push ups are also good, and if you're going to do them, why not do the whole 'popping to your feet' routine - kind of a variation on the 'squat thrust' exercise, pop to your feet and then jump as high as you can. This way you work all the 'popping' muscles and by jumping you work the legs (quads).
Cycling is a good one for the legs, also Off roading on a MTB will help strengthen the stabiliser muscles (and it's damn good fun) Cycling is also less high impact on the knees.
If you're going to run, make sure you warm up and stretch (same with all exercises really, inc surfing) because if you do this you will be able to go for longer and you will minimise the risk of damaging muscles.
