Old guy pop-up

This is an interesting post from silversurferdude.com. I often do this when tired at the end of a session and expect to do it more often as I move into my 70's. :D

I have pretty much given up to do a proper pop up. Now I first get to my knees. But i am surfing, and catching a lot of waves.

If you are an older person like me ( 64 years ) you can try doing the pop up more slowly using your knees.

I am experimenting with surfing the first part of the wave as a kneesurfer. As soon that I feel that I have the wave, I get to my knees. Lean to one side. You turn in that direction. If the wave looks as if it is just about to break, then I go straight down and lean back to keep the board from pearling. Or hold in one rail ( rail grab ) to get a sharp turn You then have more time to look around at the line up, if somebody are trying to take off from the same wave. Also you avoid a lot of nasty falls.

I believe older people simply have not got the fast reactions and the flexibility, as you find in a young person. Your surf style must therefore follow different rules

Although looking at his video he seems to have about 5 seconds to complete the pop up - not going to help on many waves. Still, whatever works is my philosophy and great for him

Keep on with yoga and pilates build a muscle and joint response mechanism that can respond to poop up needs.
The fall back position ( oops let me rephrase that) knee first, if works and keeps you surfing, is good too!
I find that without power to stabilise my pop up then my ability to rise suddenly is not as good and more wobbly.
Working on a collapsed zimmerframe that a push of a button hydraulically telescopes the holder to an upright position.

Hahaha. Well I have no problems with either one. I never do a 3 hour session though partly because my job/life doesn't allow me 3 hours of free time and partly because most of the older surfers I see suffer from various ailments related to chronic overuse injuries. Lately I have been increasing some of my outings from 30 minutes to maybe 60 minutes but still I mostly just surf for 30 minutes at a time. It makes for slow learning but I am fit and healthy (so far)
