Is this the right place to ask? I was in Cozumel 2 weeks ago and had my first lesson and it was fantastic!
However with paddling out and told to raise my head and neck with paddling and had immediate pop and pain in my left chest then to my right.
I am in shape and worked out for this. I have have chest muscle pain since then and slowly geting better. Sound familiar??

Yes I finished and yes I am addicted!

When you paddle neck fitness is important, there a couple of circumstance where new surfers have had hyper extension injuries and some paralysis.

With your description and the popping noise, it is more likely the neck positioning torqued the chest muscles to cause a rib to move differently where it articulates on the sternum.
Beyond that without actually examining you I am making an educated guess ( I am a retired chiropractor).
I would suggest a set of choices to find out what the reality is , Sports medicine specialist doctor, chiropractor, physiotherapist .
Go to one of these and get a diagnosis, it is likely to be quite simple, but being sure is the way to go!
If you need to,ask more feel free!

You need to get it diagnosed especially if you don't want to end up not being able to surf
