As a kid, I remember trying to pop up at that exact moment I would be pearling. Once I got that timing down, I was off surfing. That was the best advice I received as a kid that helped me learn the "feeling" of when to pop up and stop the pearling. To this day as I paddle I still think "pop up before I pearl" and if I do start to pearl I just pull back knowing I missed my chance.
