New surfer seeking advise

Hey guys, I'm sorry if a question similar to this has already been asked. I couldn't find one.

So here is my situation, I am relocating to Malibu and don't know what I want to ride... I am a very fit guy, 6'2" 170. Former college athlete, I have stand up paddleboarded before, as well as wake boarded and skied, if those are relevant. I am really interested in getting into the ocean and being involved for several reasons. I love being outdoors and definitely want to take advantage of the new landscape, and I would like to get a good workout in. I know there is a bit of distain towards the sup community when it comes to waves, so I want to consider that. I am not able to spend more than $1000 on the gear, already have roof rack. I am from a non-coastal area and I have never been to Malibu or surfed before. I am wanting to learn to surf at some point regardless of what I buy now. Do you guys think, if I had to only get one, that it would be a better idea to get a hard SUP or a long board? Does the malibu scene seem more conducive for long boarding or SUPing at all?

You'll probably get a better welcome here on this forum than at the Malibu Zoo.

So welcome, fortunately there are other parts of the area in which you won't be road kill.

Now about what to ride, some questions, about the SUP bit, have you only paddled it on lakes? Totally different ball game in the surf. simply put as a complete noob you won't be welcomed in a high traffic surf zone

If you really want to surf, then a long board is the way to go........ Don't go for a soft one, look at something about 9ft and not performance, you need to be able to catch waves to be able to surf.

None of the sports you have done are anything other than a fitness gift as you have to master popping up and wave reading. Being towed or skiing due to gravity , skateboarding etc you are already standing!

Your fitness will count though, take a couple of lesson and buy good second hand.

Yep, take a few lessons, get a 2nd hand longboard. Not a SUP. You will be surfing in a crowded area, so learn surf etiquette and stay out of the way (eg go to smaller/second peaks) if you can, for a while at least. Your instructor should (but may not) teach you this stuff. After you have had a few lessons, just practice

Look at his size and weight and experience, a mini mal would be too small, 9ft would be my suggestion and a Zoo pass!
