The best website BY FAR for surf reports is
http://www.buoyweather.com and this is worldwide not just for Australia!!!
If your area doesn't have an actual ocean buoy gathering data then find a virtual buoy as they are good too.
This will give you the swell direction, size, period and wind directions too. And it is never very far off the mark, I surf by it all the time, that and the NSW tide tables.
Here is a link to the virtual buoys for the NSW region:

Other Websites are
http://www.realsurf.com.au it's heavily Sydney based but has some surf reports for other areas too. I don't really go by what they say too much as they usually keep quiet when it's really going off. The guy who does my local beach is quite good but whenever he's quiet I'm usually out there with him having a blast! Their forums aren't very beginner friendly either so don't go in there asking kooky questions as there are quite a few macho localist grommie trolls in their looking for a flame war.
Another goodie is
http://www.surfit.com.au unfortunately it is also very sydney Northern beaches orientated.
