Is my board too big for a beginner?

Postby Tomi_li » Fri Apr 05, 2013 6:58 pm

First off I am pretty small, 5"5 130ish pounds male, but I have a powerlifter/bodybuilder strength/physique. Feels weird saying that, but just take my word for it because I just want the best board for me, I don't want people to suggest a board for someone doesn't have the athletic ability to handle a board.

ANYWAY, I got a 7"4 21 1/2 wide 2 5/8 thick custom board.

And one of my questions is that maybe that board is for a bigger guy? I was thinking about maybe aiming for a 6"2ish board which would be 7 inches above my height that would both be able to suit my weight better and have duck diving capability.

After I surf 3-4 times a week for a month thats my idea, Ive been out before last year sometimes and don't know too much but is this a good idea since I am smaller than most or is it going to be too difficult dropping 12-14 inches?

The 7'4" at that width is ideal as a starter for your size it's already shortish and when you get your surfing to a good level on this board then you can drop the size and be ready for it.

Do a lot of surfing ( as much as possible) on your current board believe me you'll know when it's time to change!
Oh and as a bit of information for you, a board is not a custom board unless it is specifically made for your request, once it passes from the original person for whom it was shaped, it becomes an ordinary board!

Quite often a seller tells a newbie that it's custom made, extracts a few extra $$s there could be benefits or it could be light glass job, usually for to ongoing buyer there is not much in for them except a lighter wallet!

No such thing, there are boards too small but too big anyone can learn on. That is, unless you can't carry it due to weight or what have you.

As Jaffa pointed out, unless someone is out to sell you a 10'0 longboard for profit, bigger is always better than smaller
