learning to surf backside

Postby spectrefish » Wed Oct 10, 2012 9:02 pm

So I'm at the point where I'm trying to learn bottom turns and I spend all my time out in the water waiting for the lefts and ignoring the rights since I'm goofy foot. I've taken off on a right a handful of times but I feel like I should get better frontside before learning backside.

When is the best time to start learning how to surf backside?

Should I concentrate on learning frontside first with the logic that once you know how to surf one way, it'll be easier to pick it up the other?

Thanks!

Learn straightaway - it'll double your wave count! :D

Surfing backside isn't all that hard - I'm a natural footer and I prefer going left, to me it feels like a more natural position. Some things are harder on your backhand, bottom turns in particular, but you'll find that some manoeuvres are easier for you.

By waiting for only front side you are missing waves, and thus opportunities to surf and practice. Take all waves, backside or front, fall or not, don't pass up a ride...

Get every single wave you can (while adhering to proper etiquette)

I think the advice is loud and clear:

"foolish boy...don't pass up a wave!!!"

8) advice taken.
